Social bookmarking and tagging

Well, this has really been a journey of discovery for me.  I’ve set up my delicious account and started adding bookmarks.  This is an amazingly useful application.  I’m definately going to migrate from using favourites to using delicious to store my bookmarks in future.  I’ve also added the imperiallibrary page and Ruth H’s page to my Network and set up an RSS feed from these.  I also added an article to the imperiallibrary page.  I can see that being able to share bookmarks is immensely valuable and a great way for liaison librarians to provide useful links for students.  It’s so easy to bookmark useful sites and they are then instantly available.  I must admit that I’m still finding my way around the functionality of Web 2.0 applications and I haven’t quite worked out how to manage all the applications which are open at the same time.  I think I need to brush up on my multi-tasking.

You may be wondering why I’m bloggin about RSS (Week 3 activity) when this is Week 8!  Well, I’ve got a bit of catching up to do.  But as far as I can see that’s the good thing about the learning 2.0 programme.  You really can do it at your own speed.  I’ve already had experience of using a wiki (the LLT started one to collate information for the Library Review) so I’ve been working through the RSS activities.  I decided to use Google Reader – if it’s good enough for an expert like Gina Trapani it has to be good enough for a novice like me – and found it extremely easy to get started with the help of the Intute tutorial.   I’ve set up 6 feeds – not quite the 10 recommended – but these are all feeds that I will want to track on a regular basis and I’m sure I will want to add more.  My only concern is informaiton overload, something else to cope with as well as email, but it seems to me that to really get the benefits of these tools will require not just familiarity with the technnology but will require me to get to grips with a whole new way of working.   This is one Web 2.0 tool that I will be persevering with as I can already see the benefits.

Podcasting and multimedia workshop

Ive just attended this workshop presented by John Conway.  He’s obviously a very knowledgable chap and it was particularly interesting to see how this technology is being used at Imperial.  I can see enormous potential for introducing multimedia into our IL teaching programmes and I’m sure this is something that the students will expect as it becomes more wide spread.   Instead of asking for ‘the handout’ I expect students will soon start asking for ‘the podcast’.

My first blog post

This is my very first blog post.  I’ve already learned such a lot at my first Learning 2.0 programme session.    The introductory session has been excellent – very clear and very impressive.  The new training room was an excellent venue.  The best thing is being able to try out the technologies yourself – there is really no substitute for that – and it’s good having others to share the learning.  I’m really looking forward to the rest of the programme.  Thank you Learning 2.0 programme team!!
